Erin McGruder Deploys to Hurricane Harvey

University of Missouri Fire and Rescue Training Institute (MU FRTI) curriculum specialist, Erin McGruder does more than just write about disaster response. McGruder, a member of FEMA Urban Search and Rescue Missouri Task Force One (MO-TF1), deployed as a technical information specialist in response to Hurricane Harvey’s devastating August landfall in Texas.

Director David Hedrick Announces Retirement

University of Missouri Extension has announced that David E. Hedrick, Director of the University of Missouri Fire and Rescue Training Institute (MU FRTI), will be retiring in October 2017. Mr. Hedrick joined the Institute as Director in January 2007.

The University of Missouri Fire and Rescue Training Institute (MU FRTI) conducted a meeting with its Regional Training Coordinators on July 15, 2017, at the Institute’s offices in Columbia, MO. The meeting included Institute updates and the review of training plans for fiscal year 2018 (FY18).

Director David E. Hedrick of the University of Missouri’s Fire and Rescue Training Institute (MU FRTI) has announced the appointment of a new Regional Training Coordinator for the Institute for Region B: Mr. Joseph Schilling of Kirksville, Missouri. Regional Training Coordinator positions are part-time positions within the Institute.

85th Annual Summer Fire School

The University of Missouri Fire and Rescue Training Institute (MU FRTI) conducted the 85th Annual Summer Fire School (SFS) in Jefferson City on June 7–11, 2017. There were 266 students participating in this year’s training event that provided over 6,700 instructional hours of training.

Dean of MU’s Truman School of Public Affairs Retires

Dr. Barton Wechsler will be retiring as the Dean of MU’s Harry S Truman School of Public Affairs (TSPA) this spring. Dr. Wechsler has provided consulting, training and technical assistance to state and local government agencies and nonprofit organizations throughout the U.S. Before coming to the Truman School, he was dean of the Edmund S. Muskie School of Public Service at the University of Southern Maine and a faculty member at the University of Illinois and Florida State University.

2017 Missouri Fire Fighter Memorial Services

The Annual Missouri Fire Fighter Memorial Services are scheduled for May 20 and 21, 2017. The annual Candlelight Service will be Saturday evening May 20, at 9:00 p.m. The Annual Fire Fighters Memorial Service will be on Sunday, May 21, 2017 at 10:30 AM. Both services will take place at the state’s Fire Fighter Memorial in Kingdom City (the memorial is located just northwest of exit 148 off I-70).

The University of Missouri Extension, on behalf of the University of Missouri Fire & Rescue Training Institute (MU FRTI), recently received a 2017 State Farm Good Neighbor Citizenship Grant. The State Farm gift to MU FRTI will support specialized training for Missouri emergency responders to highway incidents.

Blake Naughton named MU Associate Vice Chancellor of Extension and Engagement

Dr. Marshall Stewart, Vice Chancellor for Extension and Engagement, announced that Blake Naughton, executive director for the Hook Center for Educational Renewal and associate clinical professor of education policy at the MU College of Education, has been named associate vice chancellor for extension and engagement at MU, effective Feb. 1, 2017.
