Dr. Barton Wechsler will be retiring as the Dean of MU’s Harry S Truman School of Public Affairs (TSPA) this spring. Dr. Wechsler has provided consulting, training and technical assistance to state and local government agencies and nonprofit organizations throughout the U.S. Before coming to the Truman School, he was dean of the Edmund S. Muskie School of Public Service at the University of Southern Maine and a faculty member at the University of Illinois and Florida State University.

The University of Missouri Fire and Rescue Training Institute (MU FRTI) has had a long-standing relationship with the Truman School. Dr. Wechsler has worked closely with the Institute on a number of initiatives. One of those initiatives is the Fire Service Leadership Enhancement Program (FSLEP) that started in 2002. Dr. Wechsler has been the lead faculty member for the program since its inception. The FSLEP is a unique professional development program designed to enhance the leadership skills of fire and rescue service executives. The goal of FSLEP is specifically to prepare leaders for the opportunities and challenges they face today and in the future.

Dr. Wechsler was recognized for his superior leadership during a retirement reception in his honor on May 4, 2017. As part of the event, Director David Hedrick of the MU Fire and Rescue Training Institute made a special presentation to Dr. Wechsler for his dedicated service to the Institute. Director Hedrick said, “Through the instruction and leadership provided by Dr. Wechsler, the current and future fire officers of Missouri have the skills and competency to effectively lead the state’s fire protection forces which will assure safer citizens and safer communities.” Dr. Wechsler has committed to continuing to assist with the FSLEP course for the Institute by teaching the program in FY18.
