Although some of the courses taken at the University of Missouri Fire and Rescue Training Institute and the National Fire Academy may qualify for college credit, MU FRTI does not offer a degree program directly.

Established in 2002, the Fire Officer Certificate Program provides a structured delivery of curriculum and academic rigor for individuals who wish to further their professional development without the time and expense of traditional college classes. This program has been developed and evaluated to ensure it provides knowledge and information regarding the responsibilities expected for current or aspiring company officers. Two-thirds of the required courses are approved by the American Council on Education and meet their standards for academic credit hours. These approved courses may be transferable at your local educational institute pending their approval.

We are always looking for qualified and enthusiastic instructors. Please call us at 800-869-3476(opens in new window) or email us.

Individuals engaged in teaching courses on behalf of the University of Missouri Fire and Rescue Training Institute (MU FRTI) will need to meet the specified criteria outlined in the MU FRTI Instructor Criteria (PDF) document.

To reduce the risk of identity theft, MU Fire and Rescue Training Institute has eliminating the use of the Social Security number (SSN) as a student identification number in its data systems. We have been working toward this goal and are now ready with alternative ways to insure accurate transcripts and student records.

Effective Jan. 1, 2017, MU Fire and Rescue Training Institute no longer maintains access to individual Social Security numbers. See this information sheet about the discontinued use of SSNs for student identification (PDF) for more details.

Our systems were purged of any existing SSNs and we will rely on existing and future use of unique identifiers provided by our students. We highly recommend that our students use one of the following forms of identification when enrolling for classes at MU FRTI:

  1. Go the to the FEMA Student Identification website to register for a FEMA student ID.
  2. Select “Register for a FEMA SID.”
  3. Follow the instructions and provide the requested information to create your account.
  4. You will receive an email with your SID number. You should save this number in a secure location.

See this information sheet about the discontinued use of SSNs for student identification (PDF) for more details.

If you forget your FEMA SID either go online, call or email FEMA.

The registered course program provides an opportunity for state certified instructors to teach the MU Fire and Rescue Training Institute courses within their organization. Certified fire service instructors may qualify to teach courses under the registered program by successfully completing an MU Fire and Rescue Training Institute’s Train-the-Trainer course. Qualified instructors may then register a course they teach within their own organization with the Institute.

Participants who complete a registered course conducted under MU FRTI guidelines will have the contact hours for that course added to their MU FRTI student record and the course will appear on their official transcript.
