Continuing Education Unit (CEU)

This workshop presents a unique, vivid first-person narrative of a tragic line of duty death (LODD) from 2010. Steven DeJong, a retired Command Sergeant Major with multiple oversea deployments, details the events as they occurred during the LODD while making comparisons and contrasts to combat operations and leadership. This candid discussion leverages incident specific NIOSH data, investigation findings, and personal wartime experience to highlight the many departmental issues and challenges that were contributing factors into this preventable event. Interactive discussion on leadership, leadership development, risk assessment, and responsibility allows for a multifaceted approach to understanding the course objectives. This class utilizes videos, photos, and first hand insight. Lessons Learned from the Outside will deeply discuss the qualities of training, experience, accountability, responsibility, and mentorship. Attendees will explore complacency, combat psychology, and responding to fire department crisis considerations.
