Instructor Bios



Bruce Bjorge


Bruce Bjorge a twenty four year veteran of the fire service began as a Public Safety Explorer in Verona, Wisconsin. He served as a fire fighter in the USAF based in Minot, ND, and was deployed as part of Desert Shield/Storm. After the service he moved to Springfield, MO in March of 1992 and has served with the Logan-Rogersville Fire Protection District, Springfield-Branson Regional Airport and Springfield Fire Department, and Ozark Fire Protection District. Currently he is the Assistant Chief of the Training Division with Western Taney County Fire Protection District and lives in Branson, MO. Bruce also has worked as a consultant for Railroad Emergency Response primarily working as liaison between local communities and the railroad industry and also working with communities on emergency preparedness and response issues in the event of a train derailment. He has worked with several railroad companies including BNSF Railroad Co, Union Pacific Railroad, Norfolk Southern, and Missouri & Northern Arkansas Railroads. Bruce is an Adjunct Instructor with MU FRTI in both the Haz-Mat and Aerospace programs.

Michael Booth


Michael Booth is a 19-year member of the Kansas City FD, where he currently serves in the Special Operations Bureau. Mike assists with equipment purchases, training, and regional initiatives for the Haz-Mat division. Mike is an EMT, Haz-Mat Technician, and Instructor II. He has been awarded a medal of bravery, unit citations, and the 1993 Firefighter of the Year award. Mike has been an adjunct faculty member of MU FRTI for 12 years and a Region A coordinator for the past 7 years. Mike has delivered health and safety courses throughout Missouri.

Alan Braun


Alan Braun is a training officer with the Cole County FPD and an adjunct instructor for MU FRTI. Alan is an ASE L1 automobile technician and works full time in his family-owned business, Braun Auto Repair. Alan is an integral member of the Vehicle Rescue Technician faculty and has developed a supplemental course on vehicle safety.

Alan Brunacini


Alan Brunacini joined the Phoenix Fire Department in 1958. He served in every department position. He was promoted to Fire Chief in 1978 and retired in 2006. He is a graduate of the Fire Protection Technology program at Oklahoma State University. He has a BS and an MPA from Arizona State University. He is the past Chairman of the Board of the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) and the NFPA Fire Service Occupational Safety Committee (standard 1500). He is the current Chairman of the NFPA Fire Service Career Organization and Deployment Committee (standard 1710). He and his two firefighter sons are currently developing and teaching the local command level "Blue Card" a hazard zone management program. They also present workshops, seminars and conferences to many fire departments throughout the country on various topics. He is the author of "Fire Command", "Command Safety", "Timeless Tactical Truths", "Essentials of Fire Department Customer Service" and "The Anatomy and Physiology of Leadership". He is currently working on several other fire service books. He and his son John own and operate the fire service website which is available at www.bshifter.com.

Conne Burnham


Conne Burnham is an Emergency Management Professional with 15 years of experience in integrating local and State emergency management activities. Her emergency management expertise has been centered in the development and conduct of emergency management exercises, as well as the planning and training activities associated with the exercises. She has developed, in conjunction with local governments and state agencies, several hundred exercises, ranging from orientations to full-scale exercises, ranging from executive level staff to first response personnel. Ms. Burnham has also worked with the Federal Emergency Management Agency and the Department of Health and Human Services on federal projects and exercises. She is an accomplished trainer and instructor, and teaches for the Federal Emergency Management Agency at the Emergency Management Institute at Emmitsburg, Maryland. Currently she is in charge of the MU Exercise and Evaluation Program which develops HSEEP compliant exercises through the MU FRTI.

J. Bryan Dehner


J. Bryan Dehner was selected as the Fire Chief for the city of Overland Park, Kansas in 2005. The honor and responsibility capped a career that began with volunteer work with Southern Platte and Boone County Fire Protection Districts. That effort continued through bachelor's and master's degrees in business at the University of Missouri. Today, he is responsible for the 162-member organization providing fire, emergency medical and special operations services to 170,000 citizens. He also continues to serve on the Mid America Regional Council as a Co-Chair of the Regional Homeland Security Coordinating Committee and is a board member for the Johnson County Fire Chief's Association. Bryan also serves as the Secretary/Treasurer of the Heart of America Metro Fire Chief's Association.

Dave Dodson


Dave Dodson is a 25-year fire service veteran – starting his Fire Service Career with the U.S. Air Force. After the USAF, Dave spent almost seven years as a Fire Officer and Training/Safety Officer for the Parker Fire District in Parker, Colorado. He became the first Career Training Officer for Loveland Fire & Rescue (CO) and rose through the ranks including time as an Engine Officer, HazMat Technician, Duty Safety Officer, and Emergency Manager for the City. He accepted a Shift Battalion Chief position for the Eagle River Fire District in Colorado before starting his current company, Response Solutions, which is dedicated to teaching firefighter safety and practical incident handling. Dave is the author of Delmar's Fire Department Incident Safety Officer and co-author of Delmar's Firefighter's Handbook. He is also the author of Fire Engineering's Training DVD series The Art of Reading Smoke. He continues to write and deliver classes on firefighter safety & survival issues and first-due officer procedures. Chief Dodson has served as the Chairman of the NFPA 1521 Task Group (Fire Department Safety Officer) and served on the Fire Service Occupational Safety and Health Technical Committee for NFPA. Dave is also a past president of the Fire Department Safety Officer's Association. In 1997, Dave was chosen as the ISFSI "George D. Post Fire Instructor of the Year."

Smokey Dyer


Smokey Dyer has been a Missouri firefighter for almost four decades. For 13 years, he served as the Chief of Lee's Summit FD and in October 2000, became Chief of Kansas City FD. Chief Dyer holds an Associate's Degree in Fire Science from Penn Valley Community College, a Bachelor's Degree in Business Administration from the University of Missouri-Columbia, and a Master's Degree in Public Service Administration from Central Missouri State University. He has been an adjunct faculty member for the National Fire Academy and MU FRTI for many years. From 1998 to 1999, he served as the president of the International Association of Fire Chiefs.

Todd Farley


Todd Farley is the Deputy Chief responsible for Operations and Training at the Central Jackson County Fire Protection District. He is one of three Advocates in the State of Missouri for the Everyone Goes Home Program of the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation. Chief Farley has been in the fire service for 23 years and is a graduate of the Executive Fire Officer Program through the National Fire Academy and Chief Fire Officer Designee from the Commission on Professional Credentialing.

Chaplain Floyd Ferguson


Chaplain Floyd Ferguson is the Midwest Regional Director for the Federation of Fire Chaplains, and an instructor for the Federation of Fire Chaplains. He is the President of the Missouri Fire Chaplains Corps, a Fire Chaplain and career firefighter with EMT license for the St. Joseph, Missouri, Fire Department. Floyd serves as Pastor of Bolckow Christian Church, in Bolckow, Missouri and is a PRN Hospice Chaplain. Floyd has many accomplishments including a Masters Degree in Family Development and Education, a Bachelors Degree in Religion, an Associates Degree in Pre Social Work, and Associates Degree in Fire Science Technology. He is also certified by the Missouri Department of Public Safety as Firefighter I and II, Haz Mat Awareness and Operations, Fire Instructor I, Fire Investigator and as a Fire Inspector.

David Fischer


David Fischer has been a training officer with the Nevada State Fire Marshal since April 1996. Chief Fischer is also a visiting assistant professor at Southern Illinois University teaching in the Chicago area and Goodfellow AFB. Chief Fischer has been appointed to the NFPA Professional Qualifications Committees on Fire Fighter and Fire Investigator. He has been an Adjunct Faculty member of MU FRTI as well as a Specialist for Oklahoma State University, Fire Service Training. Chief Fischer holds a Master's Degree in Public Service Administration from Central Missouri State University, a Bachelor's Degree from Western Illinois University, and an Associate's Degree in Fire Technology from East Central College. He is also an Executive Fire Officer Graduate of the National Fire Academy and holds the title of Certified Fire Protection Specialist from the Certified Fire Protection Specialist Board. He holds certifications from either IFSAC or the PRO Board in the following disciplines: Firefighter I & II, Fire Officer I, Fire Instructor II, Fire Investigator, and Incident Safety Officer - Fire Suppression.

Dan Flynn


Dan Flynn DRI, HCC, FDAI founded FireStoppers after leaving his position as a Project Manager for Alberici Constructors, combining his construction and Fire Service background. He has served as the National Chairman for the Education Committee of the Firestop Contractors' International Association. He is the only individual ever authorized to provide continuing education classes to Code Officials by the International Firestop Council. Dan is a Fire Service Instructor, a NIMS Instructor for the Department of Homeland Security and teaches for the Office of Domestic Preparedness, FEMA and the State of Missouri. Dan served for 5 years as a member of FEMA's Urban Search & Rescue team Missouri Task Force 1, as a Rescue Specialist, a HAZMAT Technician and a Swiftwater Rescue Technician. Stephen Gettemeier


Stephen Gettemeier has been in the fire service for over 30 years and comes from a construction background being a carpenter for over 38 years. For the past 14 years Steve has been the Fire Marshal for the Florissant Valley Fire Protection District. He has helped in the development and now teaches parts of the Fire Inspector course used by the Division of Fire Safety. Steve holds certifications as a Fire Inspector, Fire Investigator, he is an Instructor III, Fire Officer II and Evaluator. Billy Goldfeder FFO


Billy Goldfeder FFO has been a firefighter since 1973, and is a Deputy Chief of the Loveland-Symmes (OH) Fire Department. He has been a Chief Officer since 1982. He is a member of the NFFF board of directors and the September 11th Families Association. He has served on several NFPA and IAFC committees and is Vice Chairman of the IAFC's Safety, Health and Survival Section and the IAFC National Firefighter Near-Miss Reporting Task Force. He has been an FDIC instructor for 25 years and a member of the FDIC educational advisory board for 15 years. Chaplain Ed Hatcher


Chaplain Ed Hatcher is a retired Air Force chaplain with more than 30 years of pastoral experience. He specializes in crisis and trauma ministry, being an Association of Traumatic Stress Specialists Certified Trauma Responder and an American Academy of Experts in Traumatic Stress certified expert in both Acute and Traumatic Stress. He is an approved instructor for more than 15 different International Critical Incident Stress Foundation courses and holds all ICISF Certificates of Specialized Training. A lifetime member of the National Organization for Victim Assistance, he also teaches courses in Psychological First Aid and Clergy Sexual Assault Response. Chaplain Ed Hatcher is vice-president of the Missouri Fire Chaplain Corps and an instructor for the Federation of Fire Chaplains. Chaplain Hatcher is also active in addressing the concerns of returning veterans and their families and is a student in a clinical counseling program at Capella University.

William "Buck" Heath


William "Buck" Heath started in the fire service as a volunteer in 1974 with the South Park Fire Department in North Overland Park. He was hired on when that department was absorbed by the Overland Park Fire Department in 1975. He was promoted to Lieutenant in 1985 and Captain in 1988, running one of the busiest stations in Kansas until 1996, when he transferred into the Training Division, where he is a Training Officer. Although he assists with EMS and Fire training development and delivery, his main area of responsibility (and interest) is technical rescue and vehicle extrication. He became fascinated with hybrid auto technology in the late 90's, and developed a class with the "latest" information. This class has developed over the years along with the technology itself and has been presented for many departments and at the KEMSA conference.

Jason Hoevelmann


Jason Hoevelmann is a Deputy Chief/Fire Marshal with the Sullivan Fire Protection District, a combination department, and a career firefighter/paramedic with the Florissant Valley Fire Protection District in North St. Louis County. His experience spans more than 20 years and he has been an instructor for more than 15 years. He is an adjunct instructor for the St. Louis County Fire Academy and is a State Certified Fire Officer II. Jerry Jenkins has been involved in the fire service for the past 25 years. Dean Martin is a Division Chief with Columbia FD. Russ Mason


Russ Mason is the Chief of Central County Fire & Rescue, located in St. Charles County, Missouri. He was the Deputy Chief and Chief Investigator for the Missouri Division of Fire Safety. Todd C. McKee is an eleven year veteran of the fire service. Currently with the Eastern Knox County Joint Fire District in Danville, Ohio. Todd not only works as a firefighter at the Eastern Knox County Joint Fire District but also for the Knox County Career Center as a Fire Instructor, and is a HazMat Trainer for the University of Findlay. Clyde T. Pfisterer


Clyde T. Pfisterer was the High Rise Program Manager and a Battalion Chief with the Indianapolis Fire Department where he served for 45 years and 8 months to December 2004. Chief Pfisterer was a founding member of the Indianapolis Fire Department Arson Squad. He developed the High Rise Operations Guide for Metro Indianapolis after becoming the High Rise Program Chief and now teaches the High Rise course for the National Fire Academy as an Adjunct Instructor. Brint Roush


Brint Roush is a Co-Leader of the Columbia Fire Department Explorer Post #3. Brint has over 13 years experience in the fire service. He started as a volunteer Firefighter with the California Rural Fire Protection District, then with the Regional West Fire Protection District where he served as the Training Officer. Brint was employed with the Mid-Mo Ambulance District for many years. Brint currently is a Firefighter for the Columbia Fire Department and a member of the Boone County Fire Protection District.

John Sachen


John Sachen is the Industrial Training Coordinator for MU FRTI and the Hazmat Officer/Instructor for the Delta FPD. His teaching career began in 1956 in the U.S. Air Force and he has served in both career and non-career public and industrial departments with duties in structural firefighting, training hazmat, confined space, and management. John developed the ignitable liquid and Class B Foam, Meth Awareness and Operations, and RIT courses for MU FRTI and he serves on the advisory board for FDIC. John retired from Mallinckrodt Chemical as Chief of Fire Protection and Chemical Response.

Terry Spoor


Terry Spoor has worked in various emergency services positions over the past 34 years, including Firefighter, Paramedic, Instructor, Training Officer and Shift Supervisor. He holds an Associate Degree in Fire Protection and a Bachelor Degree in Public Administration. Terry has served as Special Programs Manager for the MU Fire and Rescue Training Institute and Associate Director of the Utah Fire and Rescue Academy. He is currently an instructor with the Fire Protection Technology Program at Southeast Community College in Lincoln, Nebraska.

Jason Webb


Jason Webb is the Assistant Chief/Fire Marshal of the Belton Fire Department. He has over 20 years in the fire service, beginning his career as a volunteer in high school. Growing up as a son of a construction superintendent and owning and operating a general contracting firm has provided him with a unique perspective into fire prevention and risk reduction. Assistant Chief Webb currently serves as President of the Fire Marshals' Association of Missouri and is a certified Inspector, Investigator, Firefighter I, Instructor and until recently, Paramedic.

Michael White


Michael White is the Missouri Emergency Response Commission Training Coordinator. Michael is responsible for implementation of MERC Hazardous Materials training throughout the state. He was previously employed by MERC as a Hazmat Planner/Trainer in the Southwest Region. Michael is Deputy Chief of Redings Mill Fire Protection District and is an Adjunct Instructor for MU Fire Rescue Training Institute. Michael is also Team Leader of Southwest Missouri Incident Support Team and is an Instructor for the Local Incident Management Team training program.

Mike Wieder


Mike Wieder serves as Assistant Director, as well as, Managing Editor at the IFSTA/Fire Protection Publications at Oklahoma State University. Michael Wilbur


Michael Wilbur has been a career firefighter with the New York City Fire Department for 27 years, and is also a volunteer firefighter. In the FDNY, Mike was assigned to Ladder Company 56 for 15 years, 8 as an Apparatus Operator and in 1995 he was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant. He is presently assigned to Ladder Company 27 in the Bronx. Lieutenant Wilbur also serves on the FDNY apparatus purchasing committee, and has given state certification to the FDNY chauffeurs school. Mike is also a contributing editor for Firehouse Magazine and Fire Apparatus Journal. He has served on the IFSTA validation committees for the Apparatus Operator and Aerial Operator Manuals.

Larry Wilson


Larry Wilson is currently a Specialist Emeritus for MU FRTI, where he has been a Chief Instructor for the past 10 years. He has been in the fire service for over 40 years, starting out as a Firefighter working his way through the ranks to Safety Officer. He holds many certifications, including Instructor II from the Missouri Division of Fire Safety, Fire Brigade Instructor from the International Society of Fire Service Instructors, and Pro-Safe Fire Emergency Response Training (Aircraft Fire Trainer Operator). Larry has helped with publications and articles for the Fire Department Safety Officers Association's Health and Safety magazine.

David Wunderlin


David Wunderlin is the Midwest District Manager for the Akron Brass Company. David has been an active member of the Redings Mill Fire Protection District outside Joplin for the past 23 years and currently serves as a Director for the District. He holds an Associates Degree in Fire Science from Crowder College in Neosho, MO and has served in a number of capacities as adjunct faculty for MU FRTI and has held many certifications including Fire Instructor II and as Evaluator for the MO Division Of Fire Safety.

William Zieres


William Zieres is the Deputy Chief of Investigations for the Missouri Division of Fire Safety. He has served with the Missouri State Fire Marshal's Office Investigation Unit since 1978. Previously, he was Assistant Chief with the Pettis County Fire District. He is certified by the Division of Fire Safety as a Fire Fighter I/II, Fire Investigator, Fire Inspector, Fire Officer II, and Fire Service Instructor IV.

David Zimple


David Zimple has spent the past 19 years in many phases of the emergency services field. He rose through the ranks of his local fire department over the past 19 years, ultimately serving as Chief of the Department. Dave is nationally certified: Firefighter II, Instructor II, Officer II, and Driver Operator. He is also trained to the Haz-Mat Technician level. Dave has served as a Training Specialist on the staff of the Iowa Fire Service Training Bureau for several years specializing in the areas of: Fire Service Instructor, Officer Development, the Incident Command System, NIMS, Terrorism Awareness and Prevention, Hazardous Materials, as well as Basic Firefighting. Dave has served as the President of the 15,500 member Iowa Firemen's Association and also of the Iowa Society of Fire Service Instructors. He is now associated with Pipeline Regulatory Consultants, Inc. He works as a Professional Trainer with several state pipeline associations as well as pipeline companies to provide training to the emergency response community. Dave also plans and facilitates everything from tabletop to full scale exercises.
