MU FRTI Unveils New Hazardous Materials Training Support Trailer
If an explosion, chemical spill or natural or man-made disaster happens, emergency responders will need to know how to safely deal with a variety of harmful chemicals and substances in their response. Our new Haz Mat Training truck and trailer will now enhance the capability of the University of Missouri Fire and Rescue Training Institute to offer portable training for departments to learn these vital skills to deal with hazardous materials.
The unit became available thanks to cooperation with the Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC). MDC located the vehicle through the federal surplus property program and made arrangements for it to be added to the nearly 20 vehicle training fleet at the institute. MU FRTI retrofitted the vehicle and modified it to hold all the equipment and props needed for future training. For more on this story please visit the MU FRTI website.

CPSC Announces Carbon Monoxide Safety Poster Contest
The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) is challenging middle school students nationwide to create a poster to help teach families about the dangers of carbon monoxide (CO) in the home. CPSC’s poster contest is open to students in grades 6, 7 and 8.
For each grade level, three finalists will be selected for a total of nine finalists. Each finalist will win $250 in prize money. CPSC judges will choose the best overall poster and the winner will receive an additional $500.
CPSC’s goal for the poster contest is to raise awareness and to help reverse a deadly trend. CO is an odorless, colorless and deadly gas. It is called the “Invisible Killer” because you cannot see it or smell it and it can kill its victims quickly. Each year more than 150 people die from accidental non-fire carbon monoxide poisoning associated with consumer products in the United States and that number is on the rise. Most of the increase is due to consumers improperly using generators indoors, in attached garages or in other enclosed spaces.
Students’ posters will be evaluated on the clarity of their CO safety message, visual appeal and design originality.
The poster contest runs from September 7 through December 31, 2010 during which time submissions will be accepted online or by mail. Find out more about the contest and the rules at www.challenge.gov/cpsc.
NIOSH Report: Preventing Deaths and Injuries of Fire Fighters using Risk Management Principles at Structure Fires
Fire fighters are often killed or injured when fighting fires in abandoned, vacant, and unoccupied structures. These structures pose additional and sometimes unique risks due to the potential for fire fighters to encounter unexpected and unsafe building conditions such as dilapidation, decay, damage from previous fires and vandals, and other factors such as uncertain occupancy status. Risk management principles must be applied at all structure fires to ensure the appropriate strategy and tactics are used based on the fireground conditions encountered. To view this report please visit the NIOSH website.

Contributions to create this centerpiece for the states fire service needs your help! Donations can be made is several ways: The “Get Your Foot in the Door!” campaign allows contributors an opportunity to receive a lifetime free admittance card; or, the Capitol Campaign Commitment is another way of contributing to the construction of the museum. FFAM is determined to pursue the endeavor and provide a piece of history to Missouri’s fire service. If you can help out with a donation, please visit one of the websites listed or contact one of the FFAM Officers.
