Controlled Burns That Got Out of Hand Have Led to Three Deaths and One Injury in Missouri in Recent Months

State Fire Marshal Randy Cole is urging caution around controlled burns, which can lead to wildland fires, after three deaths and one injury in Missouri in recent months. "We want the public to understand these types of fires can be very dangerous, can quickly flare up and spread or change direction," said State Fire Marshal Cole. "Caution with these types of fires will ensure public safety and reduce the risk to Missouri firefighters and emergency responders. Last spring, a Missouri firefighter collapsed and died of a heart attack while at the scene of a wildland fire." For full release please visit the Division of Fire Safety website.

Flood Fire Safety

A wide range of natural disasters occurs within the United States every year. Natural disasters can have a devastating effect on you and your home. The U.S. Fire Administration encourages you to use the following safety tips to help protect yourself, your family and your home from the potential threat of fire during or after a flood. You can greatly reduce your chances of becoming a fire casualty by being able to identify potential hazards and following the outlined safety tips. For full report please visit the USFA website.

Alert to Fire Safety Professionals: Fires Associated with Problem Drywall

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) is investigating potential fire hazards that may be related to problem drywall. They need your help! While CPSC is not aware of any corroborated fire incidents to date, they are asking fire safety professionals to be on the lookout for and to report to CPSC any fires that appear to be connected to problem drywall to aid in their investigation. Corrosion (typically blackening) of air conditioning evaporator coils, electrical wiring, and other metal components is a common symptom of residences finished with problem drywall. Consumers raising concerns about drywall have typically identified a “rotten egg” smell within their house, several health symptoms while in the home, corrosion or blackening of metal items, and failures of electronic devices and appliances. Consumers have also reported frequent failures of the evaporator coils in central air conditioning units. For more information about CPSC’s drywall investigation, visit the Drywall Information Center.
